The reamer drive mechanism can be classified into two types based on the prime mover: hydraulic motor-driven and electric motor-driven.
Hydraulic motor drives can be further categorized into single-hydraulic-motor drives and multi-hydraulic-motor drives.
Single hydraulic motor drive: This cutter transmission system is mounted at the front end of the cutter bridge and is powered by a single high-power hydraulic motor.
Multi-hydraulic-motor drive: In this configuration, multiple hydraulic motors power the cutterhead via a cutterhead gearbox and gear-type coupling. Since the system operates underwater, the gearbox and gear-type coupling must feature excellent sealing performance and corrosion resistance.
Motor drives can be categorized into short-shaft drives and long-shaft drives.
Short-axis drive: This transmission system consists of an underwater motor, a safety coupling, a front sealing cover, a gearbox, a rear sealing cover, a drum-type gear coupling, a cutter shaft assembly, and the cutter itself.
Long-axis drive: This configuration features one or two variable-frequency motors, a high-elastic coupling, a clutch gearbox, and a long cutter shaft that drives the cutter blade to perform cutting motion. Typically, the motor is mounted above the rear section of the bridge structure, protruding out of the water—eliminating the need for an underwater motor.
