The cutterhead is one of the key components of a cutter-suction dredger, and its model and size depend not only on the technical specifications of the dredger but also on the type of soil that needs to be dredged.
Using a larger horizontal winch pull force and a small-diameter cutterhead can generate greater cutting power, enabling the excavation of relatively hard soils.
General guidelines for using augers with different types of soil:
(1) Hard Soil: Meets the requirement of withstanding impact forces on one or more cutter teeth, making it heavy and robust. It features a compact profile and comes equipped with replaceable teeth. Both the cutter head itself, as well as the cutter teeth and tooth sockets, are designed to endure extreme wear. The cutter teeth are positioned precisely and accurately. Additionally, the size of the cut debris must not exceed the mud pump's minimum bore diameter.
(2) Non-cohesive soil: Meets the demands for extremely high productivity and the formation of a well-mixed material. Equipped with multiple replaceable chisel-shaped teeth (wide and narrow types) or cutting edges, featuring a broad, flat profile. Exhibits excellent wear resistance, particularly in the cutting components. Additionally, the position of the cutter teeth must be properly aligned and precise.
(3) Cohesive Soil: The cutterhead must not get clogged, so it should feature a full and rounded profile. It is open near the hub area and often has one fewer cutting arm (only 5 in total). This design performs well when excavating cohesive soil, producing finely shredded cuttings. The cutterhead is equipped with either flat cutting edges, serrated cutting edges, or numerous small cutting teeth.
